Master of Science
The Master of Science (M.S.), a departmental degree, is a research-oriented educational program in a specialty area within a broad field of public health. Both thesis and non-thesis program tracks are available.

Admission Requirements include a bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution and acceptance by a department within the College of Public Health. Other requirements are detailed in the COPH Bulletin Please contact the department of interest for detailed information pertaining to the various specialty areas of study.

Students interested in a non-thesis M.S. program must take and satisfactorily complete a comprehensive oral and/or written examination, authorized by the Dean of the Graduate College and administered by the candidate's sponsoring department.

Admission Requirements
In addition to the general requirements outlined above, individual departments may impose additional admission requriements, i.e., the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Graduation Requirements:

Course Requirements:
At least three of the five core courses must be completed. More advanced courses may be substituted for any of the core courses with written approval of the student's departmental chairperson and the chairpersons of the departments offering the relevant courses.

Thesis Requirements:
A thesis usually is required. The examination may be either oral or written. It may be restricted to a defense of the thesis, and/or it may cover all work offered for the degree. Only one attempt is afforded the candidate to defend the thesis.

Credit Requirements:
A minimum of 36 semester hours is required for the Master of Science degree. No more than 4 semester hours of Master's Thesis may be counted toward the required 36 hours. Subject to the restrictions cited in the Graduate Bulletin, graduate credit for courses taken in accredited institutions may be transferred, provided that:

• The Advisory Committee deems the material appropriate to the program of study. Normally credit earned more than six years prior to the enrollment in the program will not be transferred.
  
• A grade of 3.0 (B) or better must have been earned in each course submitted for credit.
  
• Each course must have been taken for graduate credit at the time of the student's enrollment in the course.

A defined level of competency in computer knowledge and skills must be demonstrated by each student prior to graduation. The level of competency is determined by the student's major department, and may be met by successful completion of approved course work at the University of Oklahoma, or demonstration of previously acquired proficiency.

Other requirements are determined by the major department. Students in a non- thesis M.S. program must take and satisfactorily complete a comprehensive oral and/or written examination, authorized by the Dean of the Graduate College and administered by the candidate's sponsoring department. The examining committee is composed of a minimum of three members. The maximum number of attempts to pass the non-thesis M.S. comprehensive examination is limited to two.
