4) Written General Examination:
The General examination is composed of exams in two areas: the substantive domain and research and statistical methods. The General examination will be given at least once a year at a time established by the department. In the event that a student fails part of the General examination, they will be given one additional opportunity to retake that exam to continue. Failure to successfully complete the exam will result in dismissal from the doctoral program.

5) Dissertation: Minimum 12 credit hours
Students are required to maintain 6 credit hours per semester if they are working as a graduate assistant, 9 hours if not. Continuous enrollment must be maintained after beginning the dissertation period.

6) Dissertation Proposal Oral Defense
Once the student has successfully passed the written General examination, the student will complete and orally defend a dissertation proposal under the direction of the five-member dissertation committee.

7) Dissertation Oral Defense
The five-member dissertation committee will conduct the oral defense of the dissertation.
Students will have a maximum of 4 years to complete all coursework and 3 additional years to complete the dissertation. Failure to comply with these timeframes will result in dismissal from the program.
