Laptop Computers Requirements

For all Public Health Students

 

I. Purchasing the Computer

Although the College of Public Health does not require a certain brand of computer, as an OUHSC student you are entitled to special educational pricing from Dell if you order your computer from OUHSC IT Support Services, phone 271-86642203 or directly from Dell via Dell’s webpage designed for student purchases from OUHSC: www.dell.com/ouhsc .

 

II. Hardware Configurations

  1. Processor: Minimum: 2 GH
  2. RAM: Minimum: 2GB
  3. Hard Drive: Minimum: 60 GB
  4. Battery: Minimum: 3 hours of active use
  5. Wireless Capability: Wireless be compliant with the 802.11 a/g standard. (Note: A mobile broadband card is not sufficient.  You need a wireless card to connect to the network.) A surge protector is recommended for all computer devices that will be plugged into a standard electrical outlet.

 

III. Software Requirements for All Students

  • Antivirus Software will provide protection and will allow frequent updates for the virus definitions. Several programs are available commercially.

Students can also download free antivirus software from the University by going to http://it.ouhsc.edu/services/desktopmgmnt/antivirussoftware.asp and following the directions.

  • Windows XP Professional operating system (Windows Vista is not yet compatible with certain required software).  If XP Pro does not come with the computer, it may be purchased from OUHSC IT Support Services or at the Student Union.
  • Microsoft Office 2000 or higher - If Office does not come with the computer, it may be purchased from OUHSC IT Support Services.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0 - Download available free at www.Adobe.com.


IV. Additional Software Requirements for Specialty MPH Degrees

For Biostatistics and Epidemiology Degrees:

  • SAS statistical package – An annual license is required for SAS. The cost of the license is $40 and can be installed by IT. You may obtain SAS for your computer at the IT Service Desk located in the Student Union (271-2203) or in the Rogers Building (271- 8664). Please call ahead for times and payment requirements.  SAS version 9.1 runs on WINDOWS 2000 or XP Professional but does not run on Windows Vista.
  • EPI-INFO can be downloaded free from the CDC web site. To obtain this software go to:
    •  www.cdc.gov  
    • Click on Publications Software & Products
    • Click on Software
    • Click on Epi Info
    • Follow the instructions to download the software.

For Health Promotion Sciences Degrees:

  • SPSS – A one-time purchase price of $95 is required for SPSS.  You may obtain SPSS for your computer from OUHSC IT Support Services, phone 271-2203.  (SPSS has not been tested on the Windows Vista operating system.  It will work on XP Pro.)
